In Minnesota, the fastest way to regain your freedom is not to wait—it is to act. Through the Ignition Interlock Program, you can regain full driving privileges immediately, allowing you to drive anywhere, anytime, as long as you are sober.
Ignition Interlock - Full Freedom
Limited License ("Work Permit") - Restricted Driving
Who is it for? Mandatory for repeat offenders and high BAC (0.16+). Optional (but recommended) for first-time offenders.
Where can you drive? Anywhere. Work, grocery store, gym, kids’ school, or just for a drive. There are no location restrictions.
The Requirement: You must install a device in your vehicle and blow into it to start the engine. It ensures you are sober before driving.
Who is it for? Only available to first-time offenders with a BAC under 0.16, and first-time test refusals.
Where can you drive? Strictly limited to:
- Travel to and from your place of employment.
- Post-secondary education (College/University).
- Chemical dependency treatment or counseling.
- Providing care to a dependent in your household.
The Downside: You cannot stop for gas, groceries, or run errands. Plus, there is a mandatory “hard revocation” waiting period (usually 15 days) before you can get this license.
Important Law Update: The 20-Year Lookback.
Did you have a prior offense more than 10 years ago?
As of August 1, 2025, Minnesota expanded the “Lookback Period” for DWI offenses from 10 years to 20 years for license revocations.
This means if you had a DWI 15 or 18 years ago, the State now considers you a “Repeat Offender.” You are likely not eligible for a limited license and must enroll in the Ignition Interlock Program to drive legally. Do not drive until we have reviewed your driving record.
- Pass the Test
- Insurance Certificate: Obtain a "Special Review Awareness" insurance certificate from your provider.
- Install the Device: Have an approved vendor install the Interlock device in your car.
- Apply & Pay: Submit the reinstatement application and pay the $680 fee to the State.
- Sign the Contract: Sign the Ignition Interlock Participation Agreement.
